What actually happens
at a colour analysis
Two hours, forty fabric drapes, natural daylight and a mirror. Here's the play-by-play of a session — and what changes afterwards.
Seasonal drapes prepped for a morning session
The setup: daylight and a bare face
Sessions run in the morning because that's when the studio light is honest. You arrive with minimal or no makeup — foundation shades skew the read, and nobody enjoys hearing that.
We sit you in front of a mirror with daylight behind it, hair tucked back. Then the drapes start.
Forty-plus colours, held under your chin one at a time. You watch your own face react — some colours pull shadows out, others make skin look fresher without anyone touching it.
The moment people go quiet
Every session has a moment where a colour the client loves visibly fails. It's usually something they've bought repeatedly for years — a signature shade that was never doing them favours.
The palette doesn't ban colours. It relocates them — away from your face.
The counterpoint is better: a colour they'd never pick suddenly makes them look rested. That's the information people pay for — and it's why swatch wallets exist, so the answer lives in your bag, not your memory.
What you take home
The session ends with a mapped palette — primary season, best neutrals, accent family — plus practical guidance:
- A swatch wallet with your 30+ core shades
- Metal guidance — gold, silver or rose for your skin
- Makeup shade notes: foundation undertone, blush, lip families
- A review of the pieces you brought against your palette
- Shopping rules: what to grab first, what to walk past
Sessions are $260 and run two hours at our Birtinya studio. Mornings only — the light is the tool.

Services behind the advice
Everything in the journal comes from paid sessions — these are the ones it draws on most.
